Dimanche le 12 mai / Sunday May 12th Doors @ 8:30PM Music @ 9:00PM sharp After a rowdy set in February with a large line-up that included many (most?) of Montreal's ace improvisers, the Murray Street Band is back at la Brique as the Murray Street Five, a more compact version of John Heward's legendary improv band. Yves Charuest (sax alto), Eric Lewis (trompette), Peter Burton (contrebasse), John Heward (batterie), Michel Bonneau (percussions) Newcomers Ninja Simone have been active in the Montreal improv scene since Fall 2012, presenting fierce music influenced by both the punk rock energy of the Ex and the fire music of Pharoah Sanders. They make a lot of noise, but in a pretty way. Spin the Bottle Jam Session! Sunday May 19
The Spin the Bottle Jam Session with host Ellwood Epps on trumpet.
The first edition was the final event to happen at the old L'envers space, and it was a warm success. We are happy to keep things going at La Brique with this third edition of Spin the Bottle.
Come this Sunday night, May 19th to hear new sounds, meet new friends, and to hear what's new on the scene. (Editors note: I ended up playing 2 performances with a guitarist I met at the first Spin the Bottle) All listeners and musicians of any and all backgrounds are welcome. As the title suggests, we will start the night by randomly select musicians to play together in small groups. After the introductions are made, we'll improvise, of course!

Ellwood Epps: trompette
--------------------
Ellwood Epps trompette
Nicolas Caloia contrebasse
Ivan Bamford batterie
avec invité Scott Thomson trombone
21h trio + 22h15 quartet
----------------------------
In the tradition of Hot Jazz, Trance, and Improvisation, this trio makes its second appearance after a sweaty night at the Mardi Spaghetti series.
Ivan Bamford is one of the most intensely rhythmic improvisers in Montreal. He operates in many musical worlds (Gadji Gadjo, Gypsy Kumbia Orcehstra), always bringing a drive and sense of purpose to the music. He has been working a lot recently with Epps, developing a way of using rhythm as a deeply improvisational material.
Nicolas Caloia is a veteran of Montreal's improvised music scene, having played with a who's who of local and international players, including Jean Derome, Marshall Allen, John Butcher, and Tristan Honsinger. Nicolas' Juno-nominated Ratcher Orchestra will perform the music of Malcolm Goldstein June 12 as part of the Suoni per il Popolo Festival. Nicolas never sacrifices depth and integrity for anything superficially impressive.
Ellwood Epps has played across Canada and the US with Josh Zubot, William Parker, Steve Lacy, Mat Maneri and more. His playing includes a certain concern for sound, inspired by Rex Stewart, Lester Bowie, and Bill Dixon. He leads the Studio d'Improvisation, and ensemble-based workshop for teaching improvisation.
One could say that Scott Thomson's work is meticulous while his trombone playing is buoyant and jaunty. He has worked with the compositions of Steve Lacy, through thorough research and in performance with his group The Rent, giving continued life to the music. Scott works with the Ratchet Orchestra, and has recorded a CD of duets wtih Lori Freedman called 'Plumb'. Scott works in Montreal and Toronto and is the founder of the Somewhere There venue which has presented hundreds of nights of improvised music.

hétéroclite, composé de plus de vingt artistes, vous propose une intervention musicale et visuelle;
The collective HodeKestra, founded in 2005 and directed by Philippe Hode-Keyser, has the original
mandate to promote a broader vision of garbage, improvised, lowest-fi music. This heterogeneous
group, consisting of more than twenty-five artists, offers a musical and visual intervention that is generator
of thoughts and new sensations; encouraging an active and deep listening to awaken the senses whithin
a world of new and unusual forms.
Their solidarity belongs to the prevalence of their performative criteria in knowledge. Their pragmatic
power is set based on the insertion of the collective unconscious, the birth of a dream world, the
eccentricity of the imagination and the exploration of new themes for inspiration. Insatiable greed to
explore new musical syntax, to share their acquired and to express throught the enactment of new
standards; the essence of their raison d'être.

7 juillet: The Moon (NYC) + St-Onge/Mouchous/Eizlini/Romary
"The music of THE MOON can surge like molten lava or flow like a quiet stream. It's a purist form of improvisation -- noise-attuned but rooted in jazz fundamentals, abstract but built on the unusually sturdy bond between guitarist Adam Caine and drummer Federico Ughi. These two play free, while operating like an old-school working band." Time Out New York's Hank Shteamer
THE MOON is an experimental duo from Brooklyn New York, featuring Adam Caine on electric guitar and Federico Ughi on drums.
THE MOON is proud to present their North American Tour 2013. The group will return for the third consecutive year on the road, touring Canada and the US. See Dates Below.
About the music: all the compositions they play are completely improvised. They have no pre-written lines, sections or forms, but they treat each of the songs as spontaneous compositions. Each piece is distinct from the others - THE MOON covers a lot of ground without sounding inauthentic. They cultivate a uniquely personal mixture of the improvisational fearlessness of jazz, the bombastic energy of rock, and the sonic exploration of 20th century classical and electronic music. These live performances have a strong large-scale formal structure from beginning to end. It's a complete listening experience, an improvised symphony. The idea has been to create music that is interesting at any given moment, but is constantly developing as if it has an structural life all its own.

Darren Williams (solo) + Taylor-Epps duo, Friday July 26
Note that this show is at La Poêle
” -Kevin Romain, Bleating Hearts, The SSRIs
------------------------------------
Saxophonist Darren Williams will be performing a solo set featuring works from his album Reed, a collection of his own compositions: “Solo tenor saxophone with nods to Evan Parker and Colin Stetson. However, Williams has taken the initiative to dash ahead of his contemporaries, creating exciting and beautiful compositions that force the listener to forget the wealth of technique at the root of the music.” -Kevin Romain, Bleating Hearts, The SSRIs
Darren Williams (www.airandbone.com) is a British Columbia based saxophonist and bassoonist who pushes the limits of improvisation and extended instrumental technique into regions that are lyrical, terrifying, uncanny, and “more fun than spiked punch live” (Georgia Straight). Called “a raw, vocal explorer,” (Stuart Broomer) Darren has performed with many renowned
musicians including Eugene Chadbourne (US), Chad vanGaalen (Calgary), Myk Freedman (NYC), Mats Gustafsson (Sweden), Ig Henneman and Han Bennink (Netherlands). He is involved in
numerous ensembles and projects, notably co-leading and composing for the free jazz quintet Robots On Fire which performed at the 2013 Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Williams was awarded a Canada Council Grant to go on a national tour in the summer of 2013 in promotion of his debut solo album Reed, on Bug Incision Records (www.bugincision.com).
Darren holds a BFA in music performance from York University and has studied with Casey Sokol, David Mott, George Lewis, and Francois Houle.
Also on the bill is the first-time performance of the duet of trumpeters Nigel Taylor and Ellwood Epps. Taylor has recently come to Montreal after some years of study and performance in Boston at the New England Conservatory. Originally from Saskatchewan, he combines a solid european classical foundation with s wild spirit of adventure in improvisation. Epps is no stranger to Montreal's creative music scene, performing, teaching and organizing constantly since his arrival here in 2005.
Darren's tour is made possible in part by the CIRCUIT collective of improvised music presenters and venues across Canada.

4 août: Black Givre, Gauthier/Pelchat/Burton/Beebe
Preston Beebe, Peter Burton, Geneviève Gauthier,Alex Pelchat
Preston Beebe : Batterie/Percussion
Peter Burton : Contrebasse
Geneviève Gauthier : Sax Alto
Alex Pelchat : Guitare
|||Black Givre|||
Black Givre is a brutal expression, an explosive cardiac stimulation, a thunder in control. Halfway between FourTet's electronic influences and the insane experimentation from Hella or Boredoms, Black Givre offers improvisation in bursts of energy freakouts between performance and interpretation. He manipulates sound effects sampled in real time, throws coloured sounds, texturise, solarise, this is the solo project of a drummer, with his machinery and drum.
Preston Beebe & Peter Burton & Geneviève Gauthier & Alex Pelchat
The Beebe/Burton/Gauthier/Pelchat 4tet creates music in the "tradition" of free jazz, inspired equally by "The New Thing" and the Downtown NYC experimental scene. Beebe and Burton work together on some seriously heavy grooves while Gauthier and Pelchat go for a mix of noisy chaos and fragile beauty.

Joe Morris is one of the greatest guitarists and improvisors of our times. His musical output during his now more than four decade long career is so prolific that it is beyond description. His importance to creative music is perhaps best summed up by Gary Giddins article in The Village Voice, "if Ornette Coleman were Jim Hall, he would be Joe Morris". Throughout his 40-year career Morris has created a startlingly original style on the guitar, and in more recent years also performs on the double bass. The list of his collaborators is long, and includes William Parker, Billy Bang, Andrew Cyrille, Peter Kowald, Joe McPhee, Malcolm Goldstein, Samm Bennett, Lawrence "Butch" Morris and Thurman Barker.
Fausto Sierakowski studied composition and improvisation at New England Conservatory with Anthony Coleman, Joe Morris, and Frank Carlberg. Fascinated by the music of Turkey and the Balkans and has met masters such as Manos Achalinotopoulos, Peter Ralchev and Adam Stinga. Played with Joe Morris, Frank London, Ted Reichman, Asan Rashid, Luther Gray and Slavic Soul Party across the US, Canada, Italy, Germany and Portugal. Released “Buck Hammerstein Clear River Chapaukee” with Nigel Taylor in 2012. Appears on Tzadik as a member of Anthony Coleman’s Survivors Breakfast Ensemble “The End of Summer” (2013).
Nigel Taylor is a trumpet player, improvisor, and composer based in Montreal. Formerly assistant principal trumpet of the Regina Symphony Orchestra, he resigned his position in 2009 to pursue studies in improvisation and contemporary composition at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He has released recordings with Joe Morris, Anthony Coleman, Fausto Sierakowski, Chris Cretella, and Nick Neuberg.
----------------------------------
Land of Marigold is the mysterious convergence of two of Montreal’s busiest improvisers, Josh Zubot and Ellwood Epps. Originating in rural Saskatchewan and Toronto respectively, the two have played together in Nicolas Caloia’s Ratchet Orchestra, Michel F. Côté's Mecha Fixes Clocks, Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin, Sam Shalabi’s Land of Kush, and with Marshall Allen, John Butcher, Malcolm Goldstein, William Parker, and Myra Melford. They are also two of the founders of the weekly Mardi Spaghetti series, a mainstay in Montreal’s improvised music scene since 2008.
Josh and Ellwood are making an 11-stop tour of Canada, going from Halfiax to Vancouver, and then back to Montreal for this, the final show of the tour. You can bet that they will be in high-flying form.

A special night of acoustic solo performances by two of Montreal's most creative and prolific improvising musicians, presented in the lovely and intimate articule gallery space in Mile End. Not to be missed!
Malcolm Goldstein (b. Brooklyn, New York, United States, March 27, 1936) is a composer, violinist and improviser who has been active in the presentation of new music and dance since the early 1960s. He received an M.A. in music composition from Columbia University in 1960, having studied with Otto Luening. In the 1960s in New York City, he was a co-founder with James Tenney and Philip Corner of the Tone Roads Ensemble and was a participant in the Judson Dance Theater, the New York Festival of the Avant-Garde and the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. Since then, he has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, with solo concerts as well as with new music and dance ensembles.
His "Soundings" improvisations have received international acclaim for having "reinvented violin playing", extending the range of tonal/sound-texture possibilities of the instrument and revealing new dimensions of expressivity.
Since the mid-1960s he has integrated structured improvisation aspects into his compositions, exploring the rich sound textures of new performance techniques within a variety of instrumental and vocal frameworks. Numerous ensembles such as Essential Music, Relâche, Musical Elements, The New Performance Group of Cornish Institute, L'Art pour l'art, Quatuor Bozzini and Klangforum Wien have performed his music, as well as the Ensemble for New Music/Hessischer Rundfunk, Frankfurt, of which he was the director in the 1990s. His music has been performed at several New Music America festivals, Meet the Moderns/Brooklyn Philharmonic, Pro Musica Nova Bremen, Acustica International/WDR Cologne, Invention '89 Berlin, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, De Ijsbreker Amsterdam, Maerz Music Berlin, Cologne Triennale, Sound Culture Tokyo, Neue Horizonte and Ton Art Bern, and Musique Action Nancy.
He has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts/Inter-Arts (USA), the Massachusetts Council on the Arts, the Canada Council for the Arts, and Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec, as well as numerous commissions from Studio Akustische Kunst/WDR Cologne. In 1994 he received the Prix International award for his acoustic art/radio work "between (two) spaces".
He has written extensively on improvisation as in his book Sounding the Full Circle. His critical edition of Charles Ives's "Second String Quartet", which was commissioned by the Charles Ives Society, is now being prepared for publication.
He now resides in Sheffield, Vermont, USA and Montréal, Québec, Canada.
Ellwood Epps (Montreal/New York City) is an improvising trumpet player, and one of the leading lights of Canada’s creative music scene. He has performed with Steve Lacy, William Parker, Josh Zubot, Henry Grimes, Le Quan Ninh, Joe McPhee, Butch Morris, John Butcher, and Marshall Allen, and appears on more than 50 recordings. He has appeared internationally at the Stone, CBGB’s, The Jazz Gallery, the Guelph, Vancouver, Halifax, and Toronto Jazz Festivals, FIMAV, Festival of New Trumpet (NYC), Earshot (Seattle), Suoni Per Il Popolo, and the Off Festival de Jazz (Montreal). Ellwood currently focuses his energy on two groups: the longstanding Pink Saliva (an electric band with Michel F Côté and Alexandre St-Onge) and the acoustic Land of Marigold, with violinist Josh Zubot; Land of Marigold has just completed a 10-concert coast-to-coast tour of Canada.
Ellwood is active in Montreal as a concert presenter; in 2008 he co-founded the space L’envers, where he is artistic director, as well as co-founding and co-directing the weekly Mardi Spaghetti series. Collectively these two organizations present 150-200 concerts each year. He also teaches privately and at the Studio d’Improvisation de Montreal.
